When you want your website to be more than just a website…

The first thing you notice when you visit Gem Tec is how fast it loads. This is because it isn’t actually a website, it’s a webapp!

What’s the difference? Well a webapp is somewhere in-between a website and an app. It’s an app that, in this case, looks like a website but it could be also be instantly packaged into a app and sit on both the Apple and Google app stores with very little changing. This is very helpful when you want all your online services to work in tandem with each other.

This particular webapp connects to Google Firebase which is a ‘live’ database. In basic terms when content is changed in the database the content is instantly updated on the site without the user having to refresh their screen.

This is very useful when you want to display something that’s constantly changing or updating, e.g. football scores, weather, flights, etc. and you have to show the user only the latest information at any time.

You may also see a small icon in the right side of the address bar in your browser of an arrow pointing into a monitor. This is your browser offering the webapp to be installed onto your computer or device, just like you would with a normal app.

You may not know but you’ve already seen webapps before. Facebook, Instagram, Whatsapp, X and Uber are all examples of hugely successful and popular webapps.
